Cystic Fibrosis and Rock Climbing

Bethany Garrison - Rock Climbing & Cystic FibrosisCystic Fibrosis and rock climbing, two things that are prevalent in my life. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a recessive, genetic disease creating thick, sticky mucous, affecting a person’s lungs and pancreas. Other organs can also be affected.

In rock climbing you need all your equipment before your start climbing. Items such as a rope, harness, and belay device are essential. The same goes for CF. You must have all your vital equipment for the day: medication, treatments, nebulizers, inhalers, etc.

Finishing Well

Rock climbing is my passion. However, because of my disease, I sometimes get discouraged and want to give up mid route. Since I am stubborn, I keep going no matter what, and ask God to give me strength to continue to the top.

I can do all this through him who gives me strength. – Philippians 4:13

CF is a battle both on and off the rock. Daily, I have to be stubborn about taking care of myself or I will get sick. When my body is weak, and I feel like giving up on even the simplest of tasks, I ask God to give me strength to continue on, and finish well.

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish
what is now being done, the saving of many lives. – Genesis 50:20

Rock climbing has taught me to focus on where I am going, to look ahead, and carefully plan my route. Sometimes there is a big rock or cranny to hold onto, other times it just a tiny hand hold but it is still there.

Just like in life, sometimes it is obvious what the next step should be, and sometimes there is just a little hint of where to go. No matter what, keep surveying your surroundings and look for the next hand hold or foot hold. Keep inching towards you goal. Above all, never give up, and rely on God when you are too weak in your own strength to finish well.

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast,
because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself,
is the Rock eternal. – Isaiah 26:3-4

Bethany lives in Rapid City, SD and is a member of the Bethel Assembly Women’s Rock Climbing Group. She is an amazing godly woman who is fearless, and a fighter. She is also, as she said, extremely stubborn, and never gives up. Bethany’s journey has been an inspiration to all of us. Through the summer, we have watched her concur fears, and overcome tough challenges on the crag, all while battling a life threatening disease. She has lovingly earned the nickname, Bethany the Beast.
